Following in Ho Chi Minh City's footsteps, Hanoi plans to introduce three new bus routes between Noi Bai Airport and the downtown this quarter with a promise of top-quality services.
They would be operated by private transporters on a three-year trial basis, Vietnam News Agency said, citing the plan recently approved by the government.
The city transport department is working with the businesses to draw up detailed plans for the routes that will possibly end at three different destinations -- Hoang Cau Street in Dong Da District, Thong Nhat (reunification) Park, and Nuoc Ngam Bus Station in Hoang Mai District.
Passengers are likely to be charged VND40,000 (US$1.76) for a one-way trip, much higher than the VND7,000-9,000 charged on the two existing routes, which are subsidized by the government.
Nguyen Hong Hai, director of ABC Taxi Services JSC., one of the three businesses that will operate the new routes, told Vietnam News Agency that the services would be of top quality, with space for passengers' luggage and staff who can speak English and work professionally.
ABC would operate 9-10 buses initially, he said.
Last month Ho Chi Minh City launched a similar service between Tan Son Nhat Airport and the city's downtown area with modern buses imported from South Korea. The unsubsidized service charges passengers VND12,000-20,000 (53-88 cents).
