Buffaloes fight in northern Vietnam festival

The organizers said the festival draws more than 10,000 people every year.

With buffalo fights becoming popular, the commune has built an arena with high concrete walls to protect the audience.

A thrilling duel on the first day of the festival. One animal managed to pin the other to a corner of the arena.

The buffalos were full of vim despite the rain. They came from all over the country including the central province of Quang Tri, the Central Highlands' Dak Lak and as far away as Dong Thap Province in the Mekong Delta. Since it is becoming hard to find good buffaloes, the organizers this year dispensed with the tradition of having the losers killed.

Owners of the buffalos present themselves to the audience and receive banners from the organizers. This year the festival attracted 32 buffalos and offered prizes totaling VND132 million (US$6,300) including VND50 million for the winner.
