Repairs to a ruptured international telecom cable won't finish until October 6 since bad weather has hampered the work, an Internet provider said.
Nguyen Van Khoa, general director of FPT Telecom, told Thanh Nien that a team of Asia American Gateway (AAG) technicians will start work on the rupture, which occurred near Hong Kong at around midnight on Monday, by late this month, due September 29.
AAG experts can't begin their work sooner due to bad weather caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi, according to Khoa.
The typhoon, the third in Vietnam this year, made landfall in northern Quang Ninh Province, at 10 p.m. Tuesday, after sweeping through the Philippines, Hong Kong and China.
FPT Telecom and three other local Internet providers using the 20,000-kilometer cable -- VNPT, Viettel and SPT -- said they have used their back-up cables to reduce the impact on their services.
While services like access to foreign websites and sending emails to addresses on foreign servers are being affected by the broken cable, domestic services remain normal, they said.
