Vietnamese websites told to remove pirated Hollywood films

Vietnam's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has demanded that three local websites immediately remove uploaded copies of Hollywood films in violation of copyrights owned by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

The websites at, and will also be fined for copyright infringement.

Under Vietnamese law, copyright infringement violations draw fines from VND50-100 million (US$2,357-4,715).

The ministry inspected the three websites after the MPAA filed a complaint in April with the Vietnamese culture ministry, demanding that the websites be penalized for breaching the copyrights of several films.

According to inspectors, the websites used software to download films for their database. Sites and have been allowing their members to watch uploaded films for free, while charges viewers VND2,000 (US10 cents) each time they watch a film online.

MPAA represents the six major Hollywood studios - Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, Paramount Pictures Corporation, Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, Universal City Studios LLC, and Warner Bros Entertainment Inc.
