Police in the Mekong Delta province of Ca Mau confirmed Wednesday that a police officer fired a rubber bullet and slightly injured a man during a raid on a gambling den.
At around 1:15 p.m. the same day, a group of police officers in Phu Hung Commune stormed into a local house after they were informed that some people were gambling there.
The gamblers tried to run as soon as they saw the police.
Nguyen Van Sau, deputy chief of Phu Hung Commune’s police department, fired a rubber bullet and hit the left leg of Dinh Van Thao, 30, one of the gamblers.
Thao fell down but then managed to run away.
His outraged family then gathered the house and surrounded the police officers, demanding Sau to sign a report admitting that he shot at Thao.
As crowds of local residents flocked to the house, emergency police were sent to the site to dismiss them.
Senior-lieutenant Ho Tan Nguyen, Phu Hung Commune’s police chief, confirmed with Thanh Nien that Thao was shot and that police are still investigating the case.
Thao has been taken to hospital to treat his injury.
Police said Thao and three other gamblers would be fined for illegal gambling, adding they seized VND850,000 (US$38) from the den.
