Vietnam woman arrested for kidnapping infant from pagoda

Hanoi police arrested a woman Sunday for kidnapping a five-month-old boy from a pagoda widely known as a refuge for orphans and abandoned children, Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported.

Ngo Thi Quy, 46, of Hanoi's Dong Anh District was caught with the child in her arms at a filling station in Long Bien District at 5:40 p.m.

Just five minutes earlier, Thich Dam Lan, the chief nun of Bo De Pagoda, reported to police in Long Bien District's Bo De Ward that a woman in her 40s had kidnapped the child from the pagoda.

The woman had asked nuns and monks at the pagoda about the living conditions of children being cared for there and must have taken the five-month-old boy when the nuns were not looking, Lan told police.

The police said they are investigating Quy's motive.
