Vietnam police arrest French doctor wanted by Interpol for child sex abuse

Police arrested Friday a French doctor working at the French Hospital in Hanoi who is wanted by Interpol for sexual abuse of children in several countries.

According to the Ministry of Public Security police, Olivier Larroque, 51, has been detained for further investigation.

Larroque is suspected by French authorities of sexually abusing and raping children and distributing lewd materials, online newspaper VnExpress reported without saying where.

The Vietnamese police started looking for him, found he had been hired by the French Hospital, and arrested him while he was attending to patients.

He told them he had entered Vietnam in 2000 and signed a contract to work six weeks a year for the hospital.

Information about Larroque has been removed from the hospital's website, but a cached copy says "Larroque, a French Hepato-Gastro-Enterologist, from Toulon will start working at the hospital from December 19, 2011."

It also said he can speak French and English fluently, and obtained a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1988 and a Diploma in Gastroenterology and Hepatology from Aix Marseille University - Marseille Medical University, France, in 1995.

The French embassy has thanked the Vietnamese police for the arrest.
