A five-year-old boy who fell into a flooded underground sewer in Quang Ngai Province Sunday afternoon and was swept away was saved by locals who opened a manhole 40 meters away and pulled him out.
Nguyen Quoc Bao slipped into a pond in the central province and was pulled into the sewer nearby, news website Dan Tri reported.
Some people who noticed it rushed to the closest manhole 40 meters away and removed the cover with crowbars.
One man jumped in to grab the boy, who was unconscious by then.
Nguyen Dai, a local, said the boy coughed out water and gained consciousness after five minutes of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).
“If the boy had gone past that manhole, it would have been horrific. It looked like luck helped us save him.”
Locals have fenced off the drain to prevent more accidents.
Pham Thi Kieu Dung, the boy’s mother, said her family lives near the pond and she was too busy selling baguette to look after the child.
She said the boy is getting treatment for fever brought on by panic.
