Taiwan searches for 4 Vietnamese who escaped from detention center
By Van Khoa - Thanh Nien News -
Taiwanese authorities are searching for four Vietnamese who escaped from a detention center after being detained for illegal stays, Taiwanese media reported.
The four inmates, whose identities were not revealed, escaped from the Yilan detention center in northeastern Taiwan on Sunday (August 2).
The center’s officers discovered that the inmates were missing from a room after a headcount in early morning.
They managed to loosen screws on the iron bars of the room window, then crawled from the window out to the eaves of the facility's kitchen on the first floor before jumping down to the ground, the center said.
The Yilan detention center is run by Taiwan’s National Immigration Agency to detain foreigners arrested for illegal stays in Taiwan before their deportation.
Nguyen Xuan Tao, an officer of the Vietnam Office of Economics and Culture in Taipei, told Thanh Nien the office was informed by Taiwanese authorities of the case.
He said the four Vietnamese were detained for illegal stays after they quit their jobs as guest workers.
