Policeman accused of stealing 154 batteries from impounded vehicles
By Thanh Nien News -
Police in the southern province of Kien Giang have said one of their officers will be punished after 154 motorbikes temporarily held for traffic violations all had batteries stolen.
Colonel Bui Kim Dinh from Hon Dat District said his department is taking disciplinary measures against “at least one officer” for violations related to impounded vehicles.
The officer, whose identity has not been revealed, is a senior lieutenant.
Earlier, some local residents complained that they did not find the batteries while receiving their motorbikes, mostly expensive ones, from the district police station, Tuoi Tre reported.
The newspaper quoted an unnamed source as saying that the stolen batteries had been sold to a scrap material shop, and that police have retrieved only 50 of them.
“It’s not accurate when the media reported that we were lenient with the violation... We will ask for further instructions from the provincial police department,” Dinh said.
