Hanoi inspectors said a controversial construction project near the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is higher than it was licensed to be.
They said the Discovery Complex II, a commercial and office building complex that is almost completed, is now 69 meters, while the height in the approved design is only 53 meters.
The building is located at 8B Le Truc Street, around 500 meters from the mausoleum, which is only 21.6 meters high.
The project attracted public attention after local media reported about its towering height.
According to authorities, projects near the historic Ba Dinh Square should not be taller than and overshadow the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.
On September 25, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung ordered the government of Hanoi to inspect the building to see if it met requirements related to architecture and construction planning.
Hanoi inspectors on Wednesday reported to the government that Kinh Do TCI, the developer of the project, had been fined for violating construction rules multiple times between 2010 and 2015.
Apart from the extended height, the developer also illegally expanded the area of construction from 29,874 square meters to 36,000 square meters, they said.
The violations have seriously affected the architectural space of the vicinity, according to inspectors.
The Hanoi government said it will strictly punish the developer for its violations.
