Fishing village holds funeral for 2-ton beached whale
By Duc Huy - Thanh Nien News -
People in a fishing village in the south central province of Phu Yen Friday held a funeral for a whale calf weighing around two tons that beached and died despite locals’ effort to push it back into the ocean.
The whale, which was six meters long, had been found on a beach in My Quang Nam village, An Chan Commune, at around 2 a.m. that day.
Villagers said the mammal was found breathing but seemed to have lost most of its energy. There were also several wounds on its body.
The villagers pushed the whale back into the water, but soon it drifted ashore again, this time dead.
Hundreds of people took the whale to a local temple for a ritual burial.
More than 20 whales are worshipped at the temple.
The villagers said the whale was the biggest one ever buried there.
All along the Vietnamese coast, whales are revered as harbingers of good luck at sea.
Temples and festivals celebrate the creatures everywhere.
