A brother of Bao's told Thanh Nien that Tuan Em and Bao had had a conflict in the same beer club three months before, after which Bao smashed Tuan Em's motorbike.
Bao's family had to compensate Tuan Em VND10 million for the damage, but he didn't seem to have forgiven Bao, he said.

Nghia and Nhan slashed Bao with their scimitars. When Bao collapsed just in front of the club, Tuan Em shot him twice.
The bullets hit his chest and head, the police said.
The police alleged that Phan Thanh Giang tried to help Tuan Em find a boat to escape the island. The duo had not been able to find any boat, the police said.
