Wintek to build touch panel plant in Vietnam: report

Wintek Corp., a Taiwan-based firm that supplies touch panels for Apple Inc., has received a license to build a US$250 million touch screen factory in Vietnam, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported Friday.

The 17-hectare factory in the nothern province of Bac Giang will manufacture touch screens for iPhones and iPads, the paper cited Nguyen Anh Quyen, head of the management for industrial zones in the province, as saying.

Quyen said the plant is expected to begin commercial operations in 2013. In the meantime Wintek will lease space to start production in July this year.

Wintek spokesman Jay Huang confirmed the plan, Bloomberg reported Friday. He said the facility will have the initial capacity to produce 10 million thin-film transistor modules per month, and "several million" touch-panel modules.

Huang, however, declined to confirm or deny whether the products would be used in Apple's iPad or iPhone.
