An exhibition featuring 29 lacquer paintings by 29 Vietnamese artists is underway at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi.
The exhibition, which concludes on May 30, marks the first anniversary of the Vietnamese Son Ta Artists group.
Son ta is a traditional paint made from a kind of natural resin mixed with gold, silver, or pigment, and is the main material used in the paintings known as tranh son mai in Vietnamese.
The paint was originally used to decorate and protect things like handicrafts and altar objects.
However, in 1932, a group of artists at the Indochina College of Fine Arts (now the University of Fine Arts) began using the substance in works of fine art.
Vietnamese artists later introduced the technique of inlaying egg shells and seashells into their work which they presented on wooden boards.
Founded in May 2013, the Vietnamese Son Ta Artists group now has 52 members. This is its second exhibition following the first held last July at the same venue.
The Vietnam Fine Arts Museum is located at No.66 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, Ba Dinh District.
