Nguyen Thi Le Nam Em won the 2015 Miss Mekong Delta contest held in Can Tho city on Saturday defeating 29 others in the final round.
The 19-year-old vocal music student at the Military University of Culture and Arts also won the Miss Talent title.
In the question round, Em was asked by Thanh Nien journalist Da Ly, “What characteristics should a contemporary woman have to be both traditional and modern?”
She replied: “For me, a woman inherits the intricate beauty of her parents. In the past a woman needed to be heroic, responsible, and faithful. Nowadays, a woman needs to be confident, self-respecting, responsible, and faithful.”
The prize for the best answer went to Nguyen Huynh Truc Mai, 20, of Can Tho, who was asked by singer Dam Vinh Hung if it is “important for a beauty pageant winner, and beauties in general, to be talented besides being beautiful?”
Mai said Vietnamese women have for long been aware of the four virtues -- home-making skills, appropriate appearance, proper language, and good character.
“A woman who has beauty without talent and skills is just like a good-looking object that has no use,” she said.
Mai was also the first runner-up in the pageant.
Vuong Thanh Tuyen, 20, of Binh Duong Province was the second runner-up.
In the final round, contestants performed in traditional costumes, swimsuits and evening wear, and answered questions from the judges.
Em also received a cash prize of VND300 million (US$14,000), while the first and second runners-up got VND150 million and VND70 million.
There were also other titles on offer like Miss Talent, Miss Tourism and Miss Ao Dai, with each winner getting VND20 million.
The pageant, organized by Sen Vang Company and the city People’s Committee, was among many activities held to mark the Mekong Delta Green Tourism Week that opened on June 27.
